In 2024, researchers conducted one of the most comprehensive absorption studies ever performed on collagen hydrolysates.
This was a randomised, double-blind, crossover clinical study involving healthy volunteers.
Rather than simply measuring amino acids, researchers analysed both free hydroxyproline and hydroxyproline-containing bioactive peptides in the bloodstream after participants consumed different collagen hydrolysates.
Why is that important?
Because hydroxyproline is a signature amino acid of collagen, and peptides containing hydroxyproline are believed to play an important role in collagen biology.
What Did Researchers Find?
The study demonstrated several important findings.
First, collagen peptides were efficiently digested and absorbed regardless of whether they were derived from bovine, porcine or fish collagen.
Second—and perhaps more importantly—the researchers detected substantial amounts of collagen-derived dipeptides and tripeptides in the bloodstream after supplementation.
In fact, the amount of peptide-bound hydroxyproline exceeded the amount of free hydroxyproline, indicating that collagen wasn't absorbed solely as individual amino acids.
That finding directly challenges the long-standing misconception that collagen is simply reduced to ordinary amino acids before absorption.
Instead, biologically relevant collagen-derived peptides survive digestion and enter circulation.
