What Male Body Shape Do Women Find Most Attractive? The Science May Surprise You

If you want to know what women really notice about a man's body, forget the fitness industry's obsession with getting bigger.

Researchers have spent decades asking women to rate male bodies, measuring everything from shoulder width and waist size to muscle and body fat.

And the results reveal something most men probably don't expect.

Women don't simply prefer the man with the biggest muscles.

The research points towards a particular combination of body shape, muscularity and body composition.

In a study of 151 women, researchers created male body avatars from real 3D body scans and asked the women to rate their attractiveness. Men with a lower waist-to-chest ratio, meaning a broader chest relative to their waist, were rated as more attractive.

But then researchers discovered something even more interesting.

Women also perceived men with this body shape as fitter, more physically dominant and better able to protect loved ones. These perceptions helped explain why the body shape was attractive for both short-term sexual attraction and longer-term relationships.

It's not simply the muscle. It's the shape the muscle creates.

A bigger chest only helps create the V-shape if the waist stays relatively narrow.

So two men can have a similar amount of muscle and still look very different.

And women may perceive them very differently too.

Then researchers looked at the brain

The V-shape finding isn't isolated.

A 2023 EEG study showed men and women computer-generated bodies with different shoulder-to-hip ratios while measuring both attractiveness ratings and brain activity.

Both body fat and shoulder-to-waist ratio were associated with attractiveness. But when the researchers considered the two together, body fat explained more of the variation in attractiveness across all three populations.

That's a surprising finding if you've spent years thinking the answer is simply:

Getting leaner isn't the whole answer. Getting leaner while keeping your muscle is.

That's an important distinction.

Losing weight isn't necessarily the same as improving your physique.
