Their conclusion was compelling.
The review highlighted collagen's fundamental role within the organic matrix of bone, summarised evidence showing that hydrolysed collagen peptides are digested, absorbed and become biologically available after consumption, and described how these peptides may influence normal bone remodelling through their interactions with bone-forming cells and the collagen-rich extracellular matrix.
Importantly, the authors also adopted the balanced approach that characterises good science. While the evidence was encouraging, they concluded that continued high-quality human research remained important to better understand long-term outcomes and optimal supplementation strategies.

Study One: Looking Inside Bone Remodelling
In 2010, researchers led by Fanny Guillerminet investigated Peptan hydrolysed collagen peptides in a well-established model of post-menopausal bone loss.
Their objective wasn't simply to measure bone density.
They wanted to understand what was happening inside the bone itself.
The findings were encouraging.
Compared with untreated animals, collagen peptide supplementation improved several important measures associated with bone health, including bone mineral density, biomechanical strength and resistance to bone deterioration associated with oestrogen deficiency.
Perhaps more importantly, the study suggested collagen peptides were influencing the biological processes involved in bone remodelling rather than acting simply as another dietary protein.
Although this was a preclinical study, it provided one of the earliest pieces of evidence supporting the biological rationale for collagen peptides in bone health.
